I've stopped ironman after a few too many bugs - I play Long War and a couple of other mods, so I don't really want to get completely screwed because of a bug. It's happened in the past. I try not to reload though. I especially plan on not doing it with this runthrough because I expect lots of dead DUSTies. I have to prove you're not immortal.

XCOM Mission Report: Operation Glass Hammer
At 0342 on 4th March 2015, an abduction was reported in Argentina. The following squad was dispatched:
SPEC John Ripper (Gunner) [Mexican] PFC Cyrus Grevare [Mexican] PFC Zero Taicho [American] PFC Padhraic Mac Iaisre [Irish] PFC Duncan Idaho [British] PFC Llast Orwell [Canadian]
Headed by GJR, the SAW wielding veteran of the only previous counter-extraterrestrial operation, the squad bravely headed out to confront the alien menace.
The landing site was in a densely built up area near a petrol station. A large number of abandoned cars lay strewn around the AO.
The squad deployed behind a large truck, which conveniently had crates stacked on the back of it to provide an excellent cover and overwatch point. PFC Mac Iaisre (eventually I'm going to make a typo on this if this guy lives long) was sent to the well covered top point.
Much of the area was immediately revealed. Unfortunately, this included a pack of 4 sectoids who rapidly took up covered positions and assumed overwatch. Quickly the remaining members moved into cover, careful not to run into the overwatch fire. PFC Orwell managed to attract some enemy attention but the oncoming fire missed and did no damage.
Now in well covered positions, the squad seemed well prepared for the alien attack. At first it seemed all would be well - the alien fire splashed harmlessly against the hard cover. A vicious counterattack by the team left 3 of the sectoids dead.
But then, suddenly! A new, larger pack of 5 sectoids came charging unexpectedly into the combat zone. While they were ill prepared initially and the squad managed to open fire killing another 2 sectoids, the weight of numbers meant that they were unable to effectively cripple the enemy assault. Still, they were all in good cover and it was assumed that they would fare adequately.
This was not the case. The aliens adopted an unforeseen tactic - psionic attack. The cover apparently did little to prepare the soldiers for this psychological onslaught and SPEC Ripper was apparently persuaded to open fire on his teammates. PFC Idaho died instantly to the heavy weapon fire, his cover offering no protection against the man behind him. PFC Orwell immediately panicked and attempted to burrow into the ground.
PFC Mac Iaisre realised that all the aliens were clustered and taking cover behind gas pumps, however. Luckily, he was carrying a standard issue high explosive grenade. The Irish soldier pulled the pin and sent it sailing over the aliens heads. The resulting firestorm killed all but one of the aliens and started a chain reaction of exploding cars and whiny scientists bitching about how valuable unexploded aliens are. PFC Idaho died again as the car that his body was behind exploded violently. PFC Taicho beat the final sectoid to within an inch of its life and then PFC Grevare elected to use his pistol (??? I think I screwed up the controls somehow) to finish it off.
Mission accomplished!
PFC Grevare was promoted! SPEC Grevare was assigned the Infantry class. PFC Mac Iaisre was promoted! SPEC Mac Iaisre was assigned the Rocketeer class (I felt this was fitting). PFC Taicho was promoted! SPEC Taicho was assigned the Engineer class.
PFC Idaho was killed in action. Alas.

It's slightly different in the mod.
There are eight specialisations. When a unit is promoted from PFC to Specialist, they get assigned to one of the four main classes. From there, you can pick which subclass to go to or select 'random subclass' which gives you one of the other six.
Tactical: Assault or Infantry Weapons: Gunner or Rocketeer Support: Engineer or Medic Scout-Sniper: Scout or Sniper

Also, I edited my post to add a "Nickname" ha
Long War is fantastic. It's a great mod. It's not joking when it says it makes it long, though. I've spent 40 hours on the previous playthrough and I'm only midway.
I decided it'd be more entertaining to do it with DUST people on a higher difficulty.
There's a lot, lot more depth and customisation to it. Some really nasty stuff can crop up though - I had a battleship arrive in March and I attempted to intercept it, had the interceptor OHKO'd, then when it landed I foolishly sent a ground team and promptly met two sectopods and a pack of mutons.
I've gotten a lot more interested in the air interception part of the game since installing the mod because it's so much more of a challenge. In vanilla it had pretty much gotten to the point where it was 'push button to send firestorm, receive bacon'. Here, there's a lot more to think about. In vanilla it was rare for me to ever need two aircraft for an interception - I've needed four for particularly tough UFOs here. I actually spent 6 downing a battleship although that was a ridiculous mistake and I lost a continent because of it.

XCOM Mission Report: Operation Broken Shield
A UFO was spotted over the skies of Germany. RAVEN-1, armed with Avalanche missiles, was sent to intercept. It almost died. RAVEN-2 was sent to intercept. It got damaged and failed to shoot down the UFO. RAVEN-3 was sent to intercept. Lightly damaged, but succeeded in shooting down the UFO!
The following squad was dispatched:
SPEC Cyrus Grevare (Infantry) [Mexican] Kills: 1 Missions: 1 SPEC Zero Taicho (Engineer) [American] Kills: 1 Missions: 1 SPEC Padhraic Mac Iaisre (Rocketeer) [Irish] Kills: 4 Missions: 1 PFC Llast Orwell [Canadian] Kills: 0 Missions: 1 PFC John Turner [American] PFC Cat Merc [Israeli]
SPEC Ripper was banned from the squad for one mission out of concerns that he might be an alien sympathiser. The three newly promoted Specialists were outfitted with shiny new gear - SPEC Grevare picked up a battle rifle, SPEC Taicho picked up a bunch of grenades, and SPEC Maicasre Awkwardname carried lots of rockets. So many that I later realised he practically couldn't move.
On arrival at the mission site it became apparent that SPEC Awkwardname wouldn't be able to continue his habit of blowing up cars. The crash site was in a secluded forest without a vehicle in sight. Well, apart from the UFO.
The squad was dropped in at the start of the crash trail of the UFO. The UFO apparently came down hard and slid a fair distance along the ground, gouging a fiery furrow in the earth and leaving debris everywhere. That debris conveniently stood perfectly upright and made for excellent cover.
With my vast intelligence and excellent tactics I had the presence of mind to realise that I should move everyone into cover before moving forward much. As amusing as last time was I didn't want to aggravate everyone.
This paid off. Once everyone was in cover, I moved PFC Orwell forward. He acted as scout for this mission to atone for his cowardice in the last one, although he might have a bit more success burrowing into the ground here. This immediately annoyed two packs of sectoids totalling 7 of the critters and this time I actually ordered PFC Orwell to hide in his cover.
As I wondered what to do, I looked back and almost physically felt SPEC Awkwardname's desire for lots of explosions. So the brilliant plan of blowing everything up occurred to me! SPEC Awkwardname opted to go for exploding the cover the sectoids were using rather than exploding one or two of the actual creatures. As a result, no sectoids were killed (although a lot were injured) but 5 of them were left out of cover. SPEC Grevare promptly removed the spleens (do they have spleens?) of two of them with his battle rifle. PFC Merc attempted an easy shot at one of the other sectoids but missed horribly. PFC Turner killed one successfully with his assault rifle.
Then I realised I had more explosives in SPEC Taicho's pockets, so I had him lob a grenade which took out two more.
Two to go! As everyone was in cover, I felt pretty confident. ... :XCOM: PFC Orwell got hit by one of the sectoids and became critically wounded! That's pretty damn lucky honestly - I would've expected someone so... rodent-like to get immediately vaporised beyond repair.
SPEC Grevare viciously put down both of the other sectoids with some very nice shooting and PFC Turner, the only one with a medikit, rushed to PFC Orwell's side. Luckily, he was able to stabilise him.
Cautiously, the 5 remaining members of the squad moved up to the UFO. Once everyone was in hard cover - I was taking no chances this time - SPEC Awkwardname fired a rocket at the side of the UFO, blowing it open.
A mysterious crystal entity appeared - the Outsider. ... It had 10HP! The combined fire of the squad failed to kill it, but injured it fairly substantially. The counterfire from the Outsider flew over PFC Merc's head, doing no damage. Then... The Outsider healed its wounds. This was ever so slightly concerning.
Luckily, SPEC Taicho had another grenade. This blew up the Outsider's cover and damaged it a little further, allowing SPEC Grevare to kill it.
Mission accomplished!
SPEC Grevare was promoted! LCPL Grevare acquired 'Covering Fire'. SPEC Awkwardname was promoted! LCPL Awkwardname acquired 'Covering Fire'. PFC Orwell was promoted! SPEC Orwell was assigned the Scout class. PFC Turner was promoted! SPEC Turner was assigned the Medic class.
PFC Orwell was gravely wounded.

Infantry in Long War can be really, really good if you get them with a decent aim and a battle rifle.
They can fire twice a turn, can get opportunist, covering fire, AND sentinel for overwatch, and they get a bunch of other things that make them a pain to kill.

In your XCOM folder:

Then select DefaultGameCore.ini.
Don't go too mad with power though. You can conceivably set a pistol to do 500 damage, have a splash zone of 40 tiles, automatic squadsight enabled, and immediately raze all cover in the 40 tile area of effect.

Sectopods remained truly terrifying because the hit chance on them was so impossible that you had to go next to them to get the hit.

So I finally got around to doing a mission report. There are so many missions in Long War I'm only going to be doing them for missions where someone dies.
This one definitely qualifies.
XCOM Mission Report: Operation Severed Justice
At 0913 on the 2nd April 2015, a large UFO was picked up by satellite detection. A token interceptor was sent to check what type it was and nearly got shot down. No joy there.
Unexpectedly, the UFO landed! This was a rare and welcome opportunity. If the UFO could be captured, then loads of shiny valuable alien tech could be recovered.
The following squad was sent:
SGT Cyrus Grevare (Infantry) [Mexican] Kills: 11 Missions: 4 CPL John Ripper (Gunner) [Mexican] Kills: 5 Missions: 4 LCPL Cat Merc (Assault) Kills: 2 Missions: 2 LCPL Padhraic Mac Iaisre (Rocketeer) [Irish] Kills: 5 Missions: 2 SPEC Ghost Kaisar (Rocketeer) Kills: 0 Missions: 2 SPEC Renard Sakagawa (Infantry) Kills: 1 Missions: 2
This was expected to be a nasty mission indeed, so the best squad that could be fielded at the time was sent. They were all armed with heavy weaponry - CPL Ripper carried an LMG, the infantry units carried battle rifles, and the rocketeers were well stocked on rockets while LCPL Merc carried a shotgun.
The Skyranger landed just off to the side of what looked like the middle of the UFO. The UFO was a long craft, and there was no telling how many nasties were hiding in there. This wasn't a good starting point. If a breach was attempted into the central area of the UFO, alien reinforcements could come from both sides.
Instead of assaulting the UFO from there, the squad headed down towards the front of the UFO, hiding in thick tree cover along the way. Unfortunately, despite only skirting the edges of the AO, an alien squad spotted ours. This was bad.
Four tougher-than-normal Outsiders moved into full cover positions, headed by a monstrous Outsider that appeared obscenely tough. The situation only got worse - the alien squad was spotted midway through the squad movement, so three squad members couldn't react.
LCPL Mac Iaisre and SPEC Kaisar, however, were both able to act and in a position to fire off rockets. The two of them raised their rocket launchers and sent high explosives hurtling at the enemy. This hammer blow crushed all the cover around the Outsiders - they'd be forced to reposition and many were heavily damaged. The explosions were so vicious that they actually pierced through the wall behind the Outsiders, into a room full of sectoids. In the first stroke of luck the squad got, SPEC Kaisar's rocket flew a little wide into the pack of sectoids, killing all of them and earning him a promotion.
SGT Grevare prepared covering fire for the oncoming alien attack, and then the Outsiders struck.
The first Outsider was promptly killed by SGT Grevare as he attempted to gun down LCPL Merc. The second missed LCPL Merc. The third missed LCPL Merc. I was beginning to notice a pattern here, and started to become concerned for his wellbeing. The fourth did not shoot at LPCL Merc. Instead, it fired on LCPL Mac Iaisre. Unfortunately, this did not miss and LCPL Mac Iaisre was killed instantly.
The fifth was the large monstrosity of an Outsider that I'd not encountered before. I expected it to do something vicious. Instead, it stepped out of cover and didn't appear to do much for a while. After a time, it stepped back into cover.
Then one soldier cried, "They're calling for backup!"
A cyberdisc, accompanied by two drones, came out of the UFO, between the squad's position and the Skyranger, and entered overwatch. 4 mutons headed by a berserker came out further down the UFO.
This was, needless to say, very very bad. At this point I realised that taking the UFO was very unlikely. Aborting the mission was likely the best option. But the Skyranger was cut off - the only way back was to go through the cyberdisc. It had to be done - but cyberdiscs are nasty, nasty foes.
The entire squad pulled back from the regenerating pack of Outsiders and the mutons and charged towards the cyberdisc. Nobody in the squad had lightning reflexes - someone had to hope they got lucky. LCPL Merc was assigned the unenviable task of distracting the cyberdisc. Using run and gun, assumed to be his best chance at survival, he ran towards the Skyranger, taking a path that I hoped would afford him as much cover as possible. The cyberdisc spurned my idea of having him run through cover.
As LCPL Merc dashed through an open patch, the cyberdisc turned and fired. Missed! LCPL Merc survived. Not only that, but he was in an ideal position to deal some damage to the cyberdisc. Before having him fire, though, SPEC Kaisar was moved up closer with a shredder rocket. The shredder rocket did a number on the cyberdisc's armour, and softened it for LCPL Merc's shotgun. The alloy jacketed rounds of his shotgun at close range did a huge amount of damage to the cyberdisc. But the cyberdisc was tough, and there was still some way to go.
SPEC Sakagawa was next up. He was in a good position, fully covered from the oncoming Outsiders and Mutons, so he opted to take both shots at the cyberdisc. Luckily, both shots impacted and the cyberdisc was brought to within an inch of its life. CPL Ripper opened fire and killed the cyberdisc. Two drones remained. SGT Grevare couldn't afford to take both of his shots, though - he was furthest behind the squad in a badly covered position and he had to move. He ran forward, closer to the Skyranger, and took out one of the two drones.
Then it was time for the X-rays to move. The drone couldn't do much damage. It only had its single bolt weapon, which wasn't enough to kill anyone. Still, it was expected to take the shot. Instead of doing that, though, it flew off into the UFO into a dark area where the squad couldn't see.
TBC

The mutons moved forward. The outsiders moved forward. One was able to take a shot! He opened fire on SPEC Sakagawa. For a moment, I was unconcerned - Sakagawa was in full cover and was armoured more heavily than most.
The Outsider didn't care, though. It fired perfectly, and SPEC Sakagawa died.
This pained me, but next round all members of the squad could get back to the Skyranger and there wouldn't be any more losses. This hope was quickly dashed, however, as a pack of chryssalids charged out of the UFO, right next to the squad. This was incredibly bad - they would easily get in range of some squad members.
CPL Ripper was closest to the chryssalid menace. The chryssalids knew it, too. They ran forward towards him. The first one stopped a little short before its second move, as did the second one. I began to hope that they might -just- be out of range, but that wasn't to be. The third chryssalid moved right up to CPL Ripper and tore him to pieces.
SPEC Kaisar panicked! He chose to hunker down, and I knew then that he was lost.
SGT Grevare and LCPL Merc made it safely to the Skyranger. But we couldn't afford to leave SPEC Kaisar to the aliens. It'd boost their research far too much, and we wouldn't leave Ghost to die to the chryssalids.
SGT Grevare carried an alloy infused armour piercing grenade. The grenade threw out massive amounts of shrapnel when it detonated. His throw was perfect. It landed directly on Specialist Ghost Kaisar, and when it detonated it killed him instantly.
That done, the mission was aborted.
KIA: CPL John Ripper (Gunner) [Mexican] Kills: 6 Missions: 4 LCPL Padhraic Mac Iaisre (Rocketeer) [Irish] Kills: 5 Missions: 2 SPEC Ghost Kaisar (Rocketeer) Kills: 5 Missions: 2 SPEC Renard Sakagawa (Infantry) Kills: 1 Missions: 2
Survivors: SGT Cyrus Grevare (Infantry) [Mexican] Kills: 12 Missions: 5 LCPL Cat Merc (Assault) Kills: 2 Missions: 3
